Half of the population of NZ will have made New years resolutions. Most of us that have new years resolutions will have goals like getting fit or loosing weight. With Christmas and New Years behind us, eating healthier and getting fit is a great goal to have. I personally never recommend starting a diet during the holidays where temptation is in every corner, or while you are hosting friends and family in your house.
It’s important to set realistic and healthy goals. You can find websites where BMI calculators will tell you what a healthy weight is for your height and gender. With today’s technology, why not take advantage of a fit bit or free mobile apps like MyFitnessPall and MapmyWalk. These tools a great motivators that allow you to track your daily progress. Either track your own progress or connect to your friends and family members and share your goals and progress. By sharing your goals you have a better chance to succeeding, especially if you have a competitive nature ;-).
If you have a partner or house mate, maybe try make it a shared goal to get fit and healthy. Because it is difficult to maintain a healthy diet and cutting back in the snacks and takeaways, when the person you live with is scoffing their face with your favourites. Having a supportive partner or housemate definitely helps to keep to your goals.
Creating routines and disciplines can be difficult in the beginning, but they will become easier and soon enough they become a norm. Habits set in usually after six weeks.
Don’t overdue it. set realistic goals each week on how much weight to loose. Don’t get discouraged if some weeks you didn’t quite reach your goal. Starting a diet also is about educating yourself with how many calories you can find in different foods. Once you start to pay notice you will learn what you are taking to much of. Some foods like fruit are full of vitamins and fibers, but eating too much of it also means you are adding a lot of sugars in your body, that can turn in to fat. Also keep track you are giving your body enough nutrients to ensure you can build up your exercise regime. After all the best way to loose weight is a healthy combination of healthy eating and exercise.
With exercise, also start slowly, especially if you haven’t done a lot of it lately. Use the smart phone apps that can give you programmes to achieve your goals without over doing it. No point getting injuries in week one after all.
