The Canterbury region stretches from ocean to the Alps, and is land of plains and peaks. A great way to see this region is by hot air balloon!
Christchurch is the main centre in this region known as the garden city with beautiful parks and gardens. Here you can cycle alongside the river, stay in good hotels and indulge in fine sophisticated dining, and a city where, just 15 minutes from the centre you can scramble up mountain bike tracks or ride a wave at a surf beach. Although in February 2011, Christchurch was hit by a huge earthquake that caused much damage, the soul of the city and the welcoming spirit of the people remain very much intact. new innovative shops and businesses are springing up as the city rebuilds.
A must-see in the region is New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki Mount Cook. Go hiking in Arthur’s Pass National Park or just wander around the picturesque bays and villages of Banks Peninsula.
A must visit in the region is kaikoura, several different species of whale can be seen off Kaikoura at different times of the year, but almost always the huge Sperm Whales. They share this part of the ocean with dusky dolphins, fur seals and albatross amongst others. Migrating species such as the rare hector’s dolphins, humpback whales and orca visit throughout the year.
